The Inner Joy of Serving my Nation

The inner joy of serving.

Several years back, I had the privilege of being induced to Tech Talent AssemBly (TTAB) as their career advisor before being co-opted as an Executive Committee Member and finally becoming an appointed Executive Committee Member.

The association comes under NTUC with a clear mandate to help Tech Talents in Singapore become resilient and valuable to the industries as dynamic and complex changes are displacing talents all over the world.

Lifelong learning is a key philosophy in our endeavor and this philosophy is aligned with my philosophy as a leader, coach and educator.

As an association, we relentlessly pursued many initiatives with the Senior Minister of State Kiat How Tan and Theodora Lai as our advisors.

I gave my heart and soul into serving not just in offering advice but also in getting my hands dirty.

I ran a reasonably successful Give and Take session to nurture a sense of belonging and giving and helping among members. I curated an almost week-long learning journey for senior IT Executives to Taiwan with raving feedback and results. I participated as part of union leaders in the pre-NDC in Bangkok, interacted with CIOs to understand the tech skills gap they faced, helped in the design of the first data analytics programme for members and coordinated the use of LEGO(R) Serious Play as a strategy development tool for the association. Collectively as TTAB, we value added to the development of our now more than 6,000 members.

Words can’t adequately express especially as a career coach and advisor how joyful it is to see the lights of advisee’s eyes sparked as they discovered new hope in a period of dismay after the loss of their lifetime job. It also can’t expressed well my gratitude towards the many inspiring CIOs and senior IT executives and secretariat ( Tiong Gee Ng, Alvin Ong, Arvin Tang, Alice Abigail Tan, Wui Sin Hiew, KuoSiong Lim 林国雄, Catherine Khaw, Maxim Tint, Ying Ying Tan, Lilian Teo, Low Irene, Mei Ling Tan, Tracy, Randy Goh, Poh Choo Tan, KL, KT, Joanne Seah (CRMA, CIA, CERM), Garion Kong, CISSP, CCISO, CCSP, SSCP, CISM, CISA, CRISC, PCQI, Danny Wong and many others) in the committee of which I learned from especially in how to give selflessly to this nation-building cause.

Today, it is my second time attending the May Day Rally.

It is a day that I reminded myself that when we are united as one behind our commitment to serve the workers with all our intellects and hearts, magic happens for us, for the workers and for Singapore.

Together, we build a better Singapore for our current and future generations.

Mom, if you are still alive today, I know you will be proud of me. I miss you dearly.
